Natsume’s Book of Friends is modeled on the Hitoyoshi-Kuma area of Kumamoto — that valley-ringed, slow-moving countryside is the very texture of the show. Hitoyoshi leans into the connection with plenty of official support (an AR stamp-rally app, a nightly shadow-art illumination recovery project). But one thing must be said up front: the JR Hisatsu Line that ties the whole area together is partly suspended right now, and the series’ signature railway spot, Okoba Station, cannot currently be reached by train. So this page will not tell you to “take the train” — getting the transport straight first is how you avoid a wasted trip.

The critical point first: the JR Hisatsu Line that stitches Hitoyoshi-Kuma together is partly suspended, and you must plan around that. The Yatsushiro–Hitoyoshi segment has been suspended since the July 2020 flood; Kumamoto Prefecture and JR Kyushu agreed in 2024 to target restoration by fiscal year 2033, with taxi-substitute transport bridging the gap in the meantime. The Hitoyoshi–Yoshimatsu segment — which includes the series’ signature Okoba Station — remained suspended or under discussion as of July 2026. The Yoshimatsu–Hayato segment separately reopened on 12 July 2026, but that does not restore Hitoyoshi–Yoshimatsu or make Okoba reachable again.

Tokyo to Kumamoto: fly Haneda–Kumamoto (about 2 hours) or take the shinkansen via Shin-Osaka or Hakata. From Kumamoto City to Hitoyoshi: with the Hisatsu Line’s Yatsushiro–Hitoyoshi segment down, the practical current option is the highway bus — Kyushu Sanko Bus runs the “Nampu-go” (Kumamoto–Hitoyoshi–Miyazaki) and “Kirishima-go” (Kumamoto–Hitoyoshi–Kagoshima), both stopping at Hitoyoshi IC; I could not source an exact door-to-door minute figure from official sources, so check the current timetable before you go.

Once in Hitoyoshi, the in-town spots (Tengu Bridge, Tamachi Sugawara Tenmangu) are relatively clustered, while the rural sites (Kannon halls, terraced fields, Bishamon-do) are best linked by car. Treat this as a region where you confirm transport first and lean on bus plus a rental car — do not assume you can chase spots by train.
