The way to shop cheapest in Japan is to stack the "10% tax-free exemption" with a store's "discount coupon" — often around 15% total off. ⚠️ Major tax-free change on Nov 1, 2026: anything bought up to October 31 runs on the old system (in-store exemption); anything bought from November 1 uses the new "refund method" — pay tax-inclusive in store, then a self-service terminal at your departure airport clears it with customs and the shop refunds you. It goes by the purchase date, not your departure date, and officials confirm there is no transition period; the ¥5,000 pre-tax threshold is unchanged.
